There will be still millions of devices that Nokia has planned to ship based on Symbian and Qt. So i guess that means there is enough devices for long time to code in Qt.

So dn't rush to burn that book, u might need it ;)
Probably you misunderstood what the poster meant. He didn't mean to burn it. He meant to read it without waiting anymore.

I thing Qt would not have any impact even after that as well.

Duff: One of the problems with the QML examples in our previous SDKs was the packaging of Qt Mobility - it was built for the simulator in the SDK but not for the desktop (where a lot of the APIs don't make sense, but obviously Multimedia does). There are QML bindings for multimedia already (http://doc.qt.nokia.com/qtmobility-1.1.0/qml-multimedia.html etc).

And as Alexandra mentioned, we plan to split QtMultimediaKit out of Mobility, to make it easier to build etc. It will still be delivered through the SDK as usual.

I doubt the 150 million number very highly. Nevertheless, we've been told it's all about ecosystems. What ecosystem should the Qt apps on those (low end) Symbian devices be developed for?

Unique opportunity? Please Nokia, stop bullshiting us.

Yea i think so too and totally agree with u..... with 150million symbian devices more to be launched by Nokia, i am pretty sure that Qt's future is not dark and we should stick to developing for it as well as start taking WP7 seriously and think of developing for it too......
well the futyure is unseen bt if we wish, its not going to be dark with WP7 in hand..... :)
Question that is just coming up in my mind:
Does this change in direction mean that bugreports & wishes in Jira that have been closed because focus has shifted to the mobile development will be re-evaluated? It seems mobile is not that important anymore after all...
It will be important, there are people still writing Symbian apps because there are lots of Symbian users out there, to the 75 million Symbian devices there will be shipping 150M more devices and these needs new and updating older apps, and of course I think all the bugreports and wishes will be added where appropriate.
In the above link CEO or some other big executive says this:
6:51PM "At the same time, there's been a lot of speculation in the blogosphere about whether Qt will be part of our 'next billion' strategy. We have not made any decisions."

I am wondering if the decision has not been made about the use of Qt at all, how the hell other Nokia top guys on the blog saying that they will continue qt in millions of other device. and Next Billion stuff.
By the way does any one knows what is this Next Billion Strategy??
Here's what Aron replied to this on our "blog":http://blog.qt.nokia.com/2011/02/14/update-on-qt/#comment-2881

bq. I want to address one point some people have mis-interpreted: When I said that Qt is being evaluated for the Nokia Mobile Phone strategy, I was referring to the second pillar in our three-pillared strategy going forward. The first pillar is Smartphones, which will be based on Windows Phone. The second strategy is Mobile Phones, which has the vision of bringing the Internet to the next billion people. Qt is being evaluated as the framework for that platform, although no decisions have been made.

Qt is used by many financial institutions. However, because of the confidentiality in the financial sector, we are not allowed to list them all. But, I can say that Thomson Reuters uses Qt for some of their financial systems. I hope this helps. Also, in light of the announcement on Friday, I must stress that Qt will continue to be a viable framework and tool set for desktop and embedded development.

I've abandoned all my Qt mobile apps simply because they won't be as long-lasting as I'd hoped. I was going to flesh them out over a few years.
I still have some Linux/Windows apps in QML just because it's so nice to program in. I will continue using Qt/QML on desktop.

I may look in to .NET programming for mobile. Even though I prefer Qt, I think .NET is the next best thing anyway. Unfortunately that will target only one platform (or perhaps 3 if you include Windows and Xbox).
But this will be a long way in the future as I do not desire WP7. In its current state it is a joke to call it a smartphone honestly. It's very fast and fluid but apart from some MS-only products that are integrated, its features can be compared to S40 dumbphones.

I'll keep an eye out on WebOS too. HP seems to be giving it justice. It seems to be like a combination of the best parts of Android (Linux kernel, OS, supports devs, do what you want) and WP7/iOS (flashy, fluid).
I don't know what they use for programming though - anyone? I heard MoJo is what they used to use (in WebOS 1.x,2.x) and they will still work but they are going forward with something else in 3.x?
Please. People. This is not a personal decision so don't make it personal. I am as frustrated by the implication of Nokia's new direction as you are. But the man has a company to save and made the best decision he can in the situation. We may not like it, but we don't have to vent by mangling persons' names and other childish means.
He (and the board, lets not forget that) made the worst possible decision ever. Any other operating system (Android, MeeGo or webOS) is a better choice than Windows Phone. Who "loves" Bing and Office, seriously? Proprietary systems only work for companies that do a 100% integration like Apple.

WP7 only exists because Microsoft has a "magic" supply of money that they can afford to waste on a toy that exists solely to hurt Apple and Google. If MS grows tired of it, Nokia will be left out in the cold.

Nokia has now become just another LG.

Hi,
I don't know kubuntu, I use Slackware and lilo (not grub).

First of all I suggest you to remove windows 7 and start using Slackware as you first operating system... ;-)

I think kubuntu make some partition by him self but I don't think it overwrite windows partition.
When you want to recover windows bootloader to mbr you can do that from windows (google: "windows 7 restore mbr").
I don't know about restoring image because you must know if your application you used to get the image took an image of all disk or only the windows partition an if it include mbr.

I hope this help you...

These days I was super-busy so I haven't had time for watching any news, earlier I've received news that Brisbane was on floods and the exact same question hit me!

I hope all their properties can be easily restored and continue to be safe.

Also did this help you in load testing the forums and wiki. I am sure the tagging system might have taken a lot of load on itself.
Yes, now we actually know that we scale. Well, the system at least. :)

Another very important factor was stress-testing our workflow. We made some adjustments based on that, mainly when it comes to saying "No" to colleagues. :P
