Linux frame buffer color depth, how to change

I'm having a hard time finding specific information to change the color depth of my screen.

I'm currently getting an error showting blit_setup(): screen depth 24 not supported, which is completely true, i rebuilt Qt 4.8.4 with ./configure -depths 18

I'm trying to figure out the proper way of using some of the command line arguments
