Capturing KeyPress on a android tablet virtual keyboard

I'm using a samsung android tablet and my notify function can't capture any of the character key presses, it only catches the enter and backspace keys from the virtual keyboard that pops up when typing. Is there something extra you have to do for the tablets to capture these events, they are obviously getting through if the entry field are getting letters. Even the entry field doesn't receive the key press events for individual letters.
