Update my application via internet ("Check for updates" functionality)

I've written a Windows Desktop application which I can compile and deploy without a problem however I haven't been able to find a way to create a mechanism to be able to push/check for updates for the application over the internet (AKA "Check for Updates" feature from most applications).
If anyone can point me in the direction where I can read some documentation for how to go by doing this it would be greatly appreciated!
