Why does the following code do not animate the opacity of QTreeWidget ? QGraphicsOpacityEffect *effect = new QGraphicsOpacityEffect; ui->treeWidget->setGraphicsEffect(effect); QPropertyAnimation *animation = new QPropertyAnimation(effect, "opacity"); animation->setDuration(10000); animation->setStartValue(0.0); animation->setEndValue(1.0); animation->setEasingCurve(QEasingCurve::OutQuad); animation->start(QAbstractAnimation::DeleteWhenStopped); If I apply the same for other widgets for eg. QPushButton , QLabel or QRadioButton it works as expected.

Hi QTreeWidget inherits from QAbstractScrollArea and has a viewport() http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qabstractscrollarea.html#viewport So maybe thats the one to apply effect to. Update: Yep ui->treeWidget->viewport()->setGraphicsEffect(effect); seems to work.
