You receive no rights in the Ribbon UI from Developer Machines. You can request a license from Microsoft at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/office/aa973809/. bq. As no patent has been acquired yet, anyone who has not signed the Microsoft license can legally implement the Ribbon ui concept in their applications without having to conform to Microsoft's requirements. Also Microsoft will not give their approval for a license to products competing directly with Microsoft's. It is highly unlikely that Microsoft will ever actually acquire a patent for the Ribbon UI as it has already been proven in a court of law to be Prior Art.
