I only had a quick look at it in a shop, so I just got a general feel for it, and cannot answer your specific questions, sorry... but I was really impressed with what I saw, and hope to own one in a week or two.

Thanks Vass, good summary-set of links. I'm sure others will find this useful as well.
Also consider that a lot of big industries have to pay for legal support to not break other patents!
That's actually another huge problem for independent developers and startups. And if you take a look at history that's where innovations usually come from. As an independent developer I do not have the funds nor the time to check hundreds of thousands of patents I could possibly break. On the other hand I should sign contracts where i obligate myself that the resulting product does not infringe any patents. When taking a look at the number of patents granted I assume that's nearly impossible by now to create an application which does not infringe any patent. The US patent law is completely broken (more specifically the decisions by the FC combined with case law) and the constraint to publish applications through stores subject to US law (for example Apples AppStore) makes this de-facto a worldwide problem.

    Hi Tuukka,
For your question if Digia must make the assumed new wii port available commercially, the answer is no, there is no such oblication. This decision can be done by Digia alone.
OK, that's what I was wondering. It would seem unfair to force Digia to support all aspects of a project whose direction and content are now going to be under "Open" control. This leads to the follow-up question: Will the non-profit "Qt Foundation" (for lack of a better name) be given the power to sell a "commercial license" to Qt? Thank you

We do have a good relationship with the friendly folks over at Qt Centre and we really appreciate the huge efforts they're undertaking. They are awesome! See my reply "here":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewreply/16377/

As far as I know (and I have seen) it is possible to run native code on rooted WP7 devices, although you are not allowed to on non-rooted devices. This is an artifical restriction, not a technical one. There are even "rumors":http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/mozilla-no-plans-to-release-firefox-for-windows-phone-7/5654?tag=wrapper;col1 that some applications will gain access to the native API officially - Adobe Flash as an example. I do not know how far the native APIs have been stripped for WP7 but as it bases on Windows CE, which is supported by Qt, Qt might run "near-out-of-the-box". From a business perspective one should make his own decision if it is really that wise for a new ecosystem that needs applications desperately to lock out hundreds of thousands of existing (Qt) applications just to push ones own proprietary technology. Microsoft does not just lock out Qt applications, it does lock out any popular native applications (Skype, Opera, Fennec, etc.). So I wouldn't bet that this artificial restriction lasts forever. It currently leads to the curious situation the one can develop an application for "all" desktop (including desktop Windows) and mobile platforms using a single toolkit (maybe Qt) except WP7. Sounds very beneficial to WP7 and the WP7 ecosystem, which is quite healty anyways, to me!

I was one of the many who got a touchpad at a discount and after you get over the beautiful UI, WebOS is somewhat sluggish (not terrible but slower than android for sure) and severely limited (lack fo apps). It goes to show that having a great OS doesn't mean much without many developers behind it.. and of course.. without a great deal of support. I don't feel HP handled the entire situation as well as they could have and ended up letting go of a OS that was a real threat to iOS, Android & Symbian.

They are two different albeit related skill sets. Which parts of Qt are you having trouble with?
I tried to install Gentoo in Virtualbox on Arch Linux, got as far as Compiling Kernel, it stopped with an error, =(.
Man... You installed Arch Linux and you have troubles with anything else????? My experience with Arch was awful. Installed it in VirtualBox with Fedora host, it took me one day to download and configure all the things about arch and the only thing I needed it for was to support my app for ONE of my users, lol. Haven't used it ever since, might have deleted it as well ^^ And I agree with Lukas, Qt with C++ was (and still is) a pleasure to learn.
LOL, Ironic isn't it? =P.. I don't know, I have a good friend on AIM who I was telling, maybe it's not all that hard, and it's just me making it harder than it really is..

Unfortunately, it was blocked by our proxy at work, but it did manage to steal some time this weekend anyway from home! :-) Edit: anyway, xkcd is of course high on the ranking, just like Dilbert and, probably not known outside of .nl, Fokke & Sukke.

No problem, Leon. The fact is that probably updating the device with one of those symbian new versions the results of any kind of development maybe unreliable. Hope that someone reading this thread can help us with some information on previews, beta etc. :) BTW thanks for those links.

The San Francisco dates really work for me! And the airfare is a lot cheaper than going to Germany. It's been a couple years since I attended Qt Developer Days - the last one was a blast and worth every penny.
