Win 10.000 EUR at the "Qtest Mobile App Port"
-
From the announcement of this competition: "As developers of applications using Qt, you already know how great it is to work with - but how about on mobile platforms, such as Symbian and MeeGo? How would you like to take that step you have been wanting to take, but not been able to justify: Take your application from the desktop and bring it into the hand-held world via the Ovi store.
Let this contest be the justification, with the possibility of a new phone or even 10,000 euros waiting at the end."So, what are you waiting for? :D More details can be found at the original news post: http://qt-apps.org/news/?id=340
A clarification: This competition is also open to new applications - you do not have to port an existing application :)

great news. Every winner gets a free N900 phone.
-
Yup! And there's even two competitions there - if you hand in early you get entered into a separate competition for another set of N900s :) It really is a nice little competition :) (i'm only involved in it so far that i'm posting this stuff and such - it's no secret that i work for Frank and wrote the announcement, but that's about as far as my personal involvement goes here, i just think it's a really nice competition ;) )
-
I am not clear on how we can have the same app submitted at both OVI and Qt-Apps.org or MeeGo-Central.org. As ovi restricts user from submitting the application else where if the account makes use of free signing.

Also who is organizing the competition. The "post":http://qt-apps.org/news/index.php/Win+10.000,-+EUR+at+the+"Qtest+Mobile+App+Port"?id=340&name=Win+10.000,-+EUR+at+the+"Qtest+Mobile+App+Port" is not much detailed and does not describe the rules very well.

The port is, in essence, a new application - as such, even though the original is available on e.g. Qt-Apps.org the application submitted to Ovi is still only available there. It's a slight technicality, but an important distinction. Didn't really want to pollute the announcement with too much technical information like that, but sure, it's a valid concern - i hope this clears that doubt up for you :)
The organisers are openDesktop.org (by way of Frank Karlitschek) and the QtFD community office (by way of Knut Yrvin). You're right, that should have likely been in there - thanks for the feedback :)
P.S.: It's Ovi, not OVI (it's a Finnish word meaning "door", not an abbreviation ;) )
-
Silly me, I thought we have competition on porting unit test framework application to mobile devices. Reading title out loud helped.

I didn't get it. Do you mean that applications already submitted at Qt-Apps.org can only be ported and submitted in Ovi for this competition. Or is it that you can also write a new app in Qt and submit.
Thank you I didn't know that Ovi is a Finnish word for door.

[/quote]Well, the competition is about porting applications, so you need to have an application to port. However, when porting something from the desktop to a mobile platform, it is not just a recompilation. Unless your application is trivial, you will almost certainly have to build a new user interface for it, which in essence would make it a new application. Llook at the difference between the various applications and their "Touch" equivalent, that you find in many app stores around the place - vastly different, touch optimized UIs for preexisting applications - this is the type of port we're looking for.

Tehee, yeah, i know - the contest name was something that i must confess to have come up with... it ended up being left in, because it's sort of... Quirky and silly, and just catchy enough to well, make you actually do what you just did ;)
-
I don't have a Qt desktop app with me. So probably cant participate in the competition. :(
-
Aw, that is indeed sad, QtK... i'm sure there will be other competitions for building new applications, though :)
-
Maybe I can go and make Jambi available for n900, to be eligible to compete in this competition? That’s something that has been pondered over some time so far. Other phones are much harder, since Jambi relies on Java 1.5, and in current form uses quite a bit memory...
It is library and not a desktop application, though :)

I think it need to be an application utility or game. Something that should be accepted by Ovi store.

I have an application on Desktop which it can be ported, but for that particular application I wrote a special mobile version so I don't think this can work and it is a task tracker application which I don't know if it can be acceptable... Maybe it is worth porting, what do you think?

Yes, I think it would be a good idea to port it.

Hey, QtK and others with the same problem: i was just told by the organisers that the competition is, indeed, open to new applications as well! So, fire up your Qt Creator and get that nice mobile app you had in mind for ages built :) i've updated the root post with this information as well, just to be sure ;)

Hmmm - the timing of this contest is perhaps a bit off! My guess is that porting desktop apps to mobile will mostly suffer from poor performance, so replacing the UI elements with QML would be the way to go. But alas QML is perhaps not quite there yet either... . Rinse and repeat a couple of months later?

Yes, I noticed that change in the blog. I was wondering if I missed reading it yesterday. But now its clear.

Yes, agree. As of now Ovi store apps are limited to Qt 4.6.3
