Suggestion for merging post replies feature
-
Dears,
I see lots of same (or similar) posts on the forums and people keep referencing posts and post replies to different places. Can we have a feature to merge the post replies?
For example
Post A author1 asks for some Symbian^3 certificate problem
Post B author2 asks the same question
None of the problems have been solved author3 writes a reply to Post B and tells author2 the problem already is discussing on Post A.
This would be great if you can merge replies with Post A and Post B in my example above.
It is just a suggestion maybe current system would not allow this, or this idea might have been discussed earlier :)

You are right but it can be that Post B for example should start at the end with a mark or something that this is from Post B. I think we should do a brainstorm on what can we do, I presented only the basic idea now let our creativity to do is job :D

Moderators can merge threads of course, but problem is mixing comments, Gerolf is right.

Yes right, but do any of you have a better idea not to have too many posts on the same topic?

Milot, When it is possible we merging threads or simply removing duplicates (if there are no new info). But I can't say that there can be ideal solution for all cases.

On maemo.org (I know that is a bit different world) it is a common practice to merge later discussion about similar topics to the one which was opened earlier (by the moderators, of course). They solve the merge issue clearly taging and referencing the merged posts that they are merged from an other discussion.
We could always close one thread and direct users to the other one (that with more comments or the more "enlightening" content should stay open)
I like this idea, and I think this can be done as well.

This is the idea Volker wrote. But also if the issue was solved think this scenario:
The post should be marked as [SOLVED] immediately and have the solution on the top and if a same post opens by another user, this should be referenced as you and Volker pointed out.
We are waiting for comments from Trolls, we can also open a feature request later. And forums need more moderators.

I actually don't mind too much the "this subject has been discussed before on this other thread"... Mixing the contents can be tricky especially if the threads have some time overlap.
I think what is important when both threads deal with the exact same issue is to "redirect" the new posts to a single thread. That can be done by adding the "redirection" and closing it after that.

So this can be the case how we should try to solve it.
Thanks for the suggestions to all of you :D
