QtCreator Designer on Ubuntu (MATE) 18.04 not showing elements in instant preview

With instant preview I mean the preview in the center of the QtCreator window. A preview through building and running does show correctly. I have this problem with the version in the Ubuntu repos and with the packages directly from Qt. Starting QtCreator from the console doesn't give any debugging output so I don't know how to troubleshoot.
Any help?

You should post which version of Qt Creator you are using as well as Qt version you are developing with.
Posting screenshots of what you have would also help.
