IOS Deploy a Beta Version

For Android, I've deployed an app to a Nexus7 connected via USB to do testing.

I have not tried this for iPhone, but assume the process will be similar for a USB connected iPhone.

What if you need or want beta-testers that are not in-house to evaluate the app?

Do you need to upload the beta to the Apple App Store or is there another method?
