Transparent canvas in QwtPlot

Is there a way to make the canvas in QwtPlot transparent or semitransparent?
I have found only obsolete code snippets on the Internet, which don't work in Qwt 6.

I'd like to make a semitransparent QWidget on top of other widgets. It contains the plot.
