Android App Polling /Receiving In Background?

I have my program able to poll a server to see if data changed. What I'm looking to do is make it so that it can poll the server while not being open. Preferably, the app would be opened automatically at phone boot and start polling in the background, and then display a notification when there is an update.
Is this currently possible?
