Using CMake in QML apps and how to master it

Hi,
I'm starting programming in QML using the online free book and select CMake as the build system for the projects. By that I want to use and master that popular build stsem. Well, It's build system but for both QMake and CMake I just press the run button on the Qt Creator IDE and it builds and runs the app, so where is the role of CMake, for instance? What am I supposed to do with CMake for a given project?
My next question is, I'm trying to test the windmill example as follows but no image is shown. I just firstly added the images folder to the project's directory and then copy and pasted the qrc path to the code. Should I add another .qrc file?
