I keep getting c++ 98 hints while I'm in 17 one... how can I tell it to use proper c++ ?

Did you updated your Qt recently?
Look here (https://forum.qt.io/topic/109833/c-98-warnings-after-update-to-qt-5-14-msvs2019) and check the solution / workaround.
If debugging is the process of removing software bugs, then programming must be the process of putting them in.
