If .toAscii() worked for you before, you can savely use .toLatin1(), too, and ^Z will be preserved.

The assertion is expected behaviour for QString::at

The position must be a valid index position in the string (i.e., 0 <= position < size()).

Instead, you should do something like:

if (5 >= a.size()) { out << "Outside the range of the string" << endl; }

I solved my problem with not calling parseFunction in its own class constructor but with signals and slots in mainwindow.cpp file:

You can use a regular expression in a loop:

Reading that report and thinking about it it makes sense that it is not an actual bug.

For [a-z] it should not be escaped, since you want to match all characters from a up to character z.

For [a\-z] you want to match character a, or character hyphen or character z.

Oh well. I didn't have a reason for doing that, it was just plain ignorance.
I corrected that, and also one more thing. I eliminate the std::string from

std::string strtmp(attr->value()); oCol.item(i-1)->setText(QString::fromStdString(strtmp));

Standard c++ strings might not cope well with UTF-8 encoding. So I changed it to

QString strtmp(attr->value()); oCol.item(i-1)->setText(strtmp);

These two changes combined have solved it. Thank you very much!
