Open-source audio player library

As written in the title, what is the best open-source audio player library?

With so few details VLC comes to mind as well as GStreamer and ffmpeg.

Well, I get libvlcpp and this is the contents of the .zip file
I see no CMakeLists.txt, so how can I compile the library?

A quick Google search shows the Videolan Wiki as a starting point.

It was several years ago, but I was able to get a cross-platform (macos, windows) desktop application successfully playing audio with:

• libsndfile http://www.mega-nerd.com/libsndfile/
• PortAudio http://www.portaudio.com/usinggit.html

Not sure if anyone urgently needs to parse mp3 files anymore, but note that libsndfile still does not handle mp3: http://www.mega-nerd.com/libsndfile/FAQ.html#Q020 (as of Nov 2020)
