SyntaxError JSON.parse: Parse error

I am learning how to use JSON with qml, and I have been running to this particular error since
SyntaxError :JSON.parse: Parse error

Attached below is the code, can someone point me to my mistake please?

can you check the responseText before you try parse it ? just to make sure you actually got json response

After adding that method, It wasn't returning anything. I'm actually running the example from a textbook. I am currently confused on what to do.

@Abdulmueez Can you post the JSON document which causes the error?
Also you can find many JSON validators on the internet which can tell you what is wrong.
If

xhr.responseText.toString()

returns empty string then there was something wrong with your request. Can you try to open same URL in a browser?

So, I think I have figured out why it is returning an empty string, the open request should come before the onreadystatefunction. But the error still remains.
I feel there is an error in the return statement, ```

After checking in the JSON validators: I found out that the html, head … tag are not meant to be returned and after also checking with the browser as you suggested, they were not there.
Are there any suggestions for what to do ?

@Abdulmueez This looks really strange: at the beginning you have a HTML document and after that document something looking like JSON but it is invalid JSON. Are you sure your server is working properly?

I thought it was looking strange too. I am trying to use the flickr api. http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?format=json&nojsoncallback=1
This was the url provided in the book(qt5 cadaques). This Html tags are not shown in a browser
