You need the "hlsdemux" plugin that is in "gst-plugins-bad".

As far as I know qtmultimedia still uses gstreamer0.10 and I don't know how to get "gst-plugins-bad" for that version.

@lukam should be in the package "gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad" or has it been removed from Mint 18 ?

@oniongarlic Looks like it has been removed from Mint 18 and Ubunutu 16.04 also.

Got it fixed by installing gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad from old repositories.

@lukam I seem to have a similar problem. What repositories did you use?

Edit: Okay, I seem to have resolved my issue with some other plugins, unfortunately I am not sure which one...

                    @hekimgil

I downloaded it from ubuntu trusty (14.04LTS). Probably v5.8 and gstreamer1.0 should fix this issue.

                      Fix for Debian Stretch:

                      1. Getting gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad :
1.1 Add jessie source to /etc/apt/sources.list
                      deb http://ftp.ro.debian.org/debian/ jessie main
                      deb-src http://ftp.ro.debian.org/debian/ jessie main

                      1.2 Install the package:

                      sudo apt-get update
                      sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

                      1. Installing MPEG decoder (I needed it to play .mpg files):
                        2.1 From https://launchpad.net/~mc3man/+archive/ubuntu/gstffmpeg-keep
                        download gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg_0.10.13-5ubuntu1~wily_amd64.deb
                        link: https://launchpad.net/~mc3man/+archive/ubuntu/gstffmpeg-keep/+files/gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg_0.10.13-5ubuntu1~wily_amd64.deb
2.2 cd to the download directory
                        2.3 Install it with
                      sudo dpkg -i gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg_0.10.13-5ubuntu1~wily_amd64.deb

                      1. Install other decoders that you may need
