Drag & Drop TO Desktop

I would like my application to get notification of a drag and drop to the desktop (Computer screen) from my Qt application. Anyway I can get this kind of notification? I have seen code to drag a file to the desktop which will do a copy or a move, but I don't want that. I want to drag an item from a spreadsheet, and if it is dropped onto the screen have my app create a new window. I saw the QDesktopWidget and thought I might be able to reimplement its "event" method() but seems I can only get a static handle to it via qApp.
