With the online installer qt-unified-linux-x64-2.0.3-1-online.run, it seems impossible to get through the meta information retrieval from remote repository. I keep getting network error due to socket operation timeout. I am based in Sydney Australia and hope this is temporary.

You might be hitting a faulty mirror. You can use the QtSdkRepoChooser to change the repository where the data are checked/downloaded.
