Photo Surface Example on iOS

I have built and ran the photo surface example on mac OS X and an Android Device without issues but when I run it on either an iOS device (iPhone 6 plus) or the iOS simulator, it builds and launches but the screen is solid white with text "photo surface" centered on the screen and never goes beyond that.
Has anyone experienced this and come up with a solution to the problem?
