QWebView improperly rendering web pages.

I am building a web browser in Qt using a QWebView. I have noticed that QWebView (QWV) renders web pages rather poorly. Google search results have weird underlines, and Google Images is a disaster. I am sure that there are many other websites in a similar boat.
Based on this observation I have several questions:
- why does QWV render like this? I was under the impression it has the same rendering engine as chrome and safari.
- is there any way to change how it renders? I am not experienced enough to climb around the actual QWV source code, however.
- Are there plans to upgrade QWV in the future?
- how does QWV loading speed stack up against mainstream browsers? Is it even possible to make a competitive browser in Qt?
Thank you for your time!
