Cannot unzip, unpack, install any version of qtcreator on ubuntu 12.04

Hi, I have tried downloading the .gz packages but they won't unzip as described on your X11 documentation
I have tried downloading the online .run installers but -even though I 'allow as executable' they won't run
Even the .run package (447 MB) won't execute under ubuntu 12.04What am I doing wrong?

Use tar command to extract gz files.

tar command doesn't work - it just tells me it doesn't look like a tar archive and then exits
will try the commandline on the other package

command line doesn't work either - no error reported apart from command not found

error is 'cannot execute binary file' -
