Qt Designer 5.3 doesn't open any Form, widget ect. at all, all Menu's and Tool icons are opaque means not usable

Hi after hours installing the whole tool chain I where keen to fire up Qt designer, the reason I installed eric the Python IDE using QT.
The QTdesigner fires up, the initial window comes up, asking for the type of top level control. Selecting any one leaves the WYSYWIG window grey. There is no command available, widget dragging works but doesn't allow to drop anywhere. and nothing to save either.
The initial setup, popping up at first start I just confirmed with no changes, was this wrong?
However, I use Win 8.1 !
