Cannot get duration of a video when using a QGraphicsVideoItem as QmediaPlayers videoOutput rather then a QVideoWidget

basically my question is as stated in the title - i am using both the examples provided by Qt:
Video Graphics item and the videoWidget examples.
in the videoWidget's example all the files i have tested allow me to seek a position in the video.
i think the problem is something to do with the duration property of QMediaPlayer as when i use the videoWidget example the duration property works and returns a value however in the VideoGraphicsItem example the duration is 0 for most videos i play back!Please help!
