Need help installing Qt Creator
cpatterson last edited by
I am completely new to Qt, and I requesting help to install Qt Creator on Linux rehl 6. I have tried several things with no luck. Below is what I have tried so far. All the downloads came from http://qt-project.org/downloads.
- Downloaded and ran "Qt Creator 2.8.0 for Linux/X11 32-bit (61 MB)" (which is "qt-creator-linux-x86-opensource-2.8.0.run"). When I ran Qt Creator from the Applications --> Programming menu, I got a multitude of errors like this:
Cannot load plugin because dependency failed to load: CppTools(2.8.0)
Reason: Cannot load plugin because dependency failed to load: ProjectExplorer(2.8.0)
Reason: /usr/local/qtcreator-2.8.0/lib/qtcreator/plugins/QtProject/libProjectExplorer.so: Cannot load library /usr/local/qtcreator-2.8.0/lib/qtcreator/plugins/QtProject/libProjectExplorer.so: (/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.15' not found (required by /usr/local/qtcreator-2.8.0/lib/qtcreator/plugins/QtProject/../../libQtcSsh.so.1))
- So. I then downloaded and ran the "Qt Online Installer for Linux 32-bit (22 MB)" ("which is qt-linux-opensource-1.4.0-x86-online.run"). When I tried to run this version of Qt Creator from the Applications --> Programming menu, I received this error message:
“Could not launch ‘Qt Creator’. Failed to change to directory ‘/root’ (Permission denied).”
When I tried running the executable from the command line, I got this error:
“Failed to load core:
/usr/local/Qt/Tools/QtCreator/lib/qtcreator/plugins/QtProject/libCore.so: Cannot load library /usr/local/Qt/Tools/QtCreator/lib/qtcreator/plugins/QtProject/libCore.so: (/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.15' not found (required by /usr/local/Qt/Tools/QtCreator/lib/qtcreator/plugins/QtProject/../.././libQt5CLucene.so.5))”
- So, I then downloaded the Qt source code tar.gz (which is "qt-everywhere-opensource-src-5.1.0.tar.gz") and used the instructions from http://qt-project.org/doc/qt-5.0/qtdoc/install-x11.html to make and install. I downloaded Qt Creator source code tar.gz (which is "qt-creator-2.8.0-src.tar.gz"), looked at the README file for installation instructions, but the qmake didn't work.
I have reached the end of my limited knowledge and am about ready to start over. Can anyone please give me instructions on installing and successfully running Qt Creator? Or point me to a complete list of instructions from start to end? Your help is much appreciated!!!
If you want it easy, don't use RHEL :) Afaik, there are 2 ways out of this:
- recompile GCC
- use DevTools
Both require you to "compile Qt":http://qt-project.org/wiki/Building_Qt_5_from_Git and Creator yourself afterwards.

Thanks. What are the "DevTools" that you mention?
Sorry, I should have linked more clearly. See "this thread":https://qt-project.org/forums/viewthread/30708/.
