Variant properties in Design mode

I intend to use a variant property like:

@property variant target
property string changeStateTo@

and change target in Design mode by "SetExpression".

In order to change its state later on a button click:
@onClicked: {
target.state = changeStateTo
}@
This would help to enable a user to build sufficiently complex GUIs in Design mode.

Unfortunately variants are not editable or even visible in design mode. Does anyone know if this is intended or "workaroudable"?

I am using QtQuick 1.1 (GUI needs to run on crappy hardware) with QtCreator 2.7.2.
