    Hello,

I asked a question on string encoding in the forum but i was confused about the category to post the question because it was a generic Qt question irrespective of the platform. Shouldn’t there be a sub-category in the forum which might be something like “Qt General”?

    Thanks,

    Sri

That is a good suggestion but I think such questions can fit on the Desktop section as well.

If the question is not really special to one of the other forums, the Desktop section is fine. It's more or less the fallback forum :-)

But wqe could also have a, let's say Core forum, for such things. I would not search a desktop forum for generic things, If I am working on embedded platform. The idea si good.

Yes, I too feel that we can have a core forum for such things.

Not sure that we should have divided Desktop and Core. It will not solve the problem. Either Desktop will be totally empty and all question will be in Core or we will have a lot of misses. And I can't say that I can choose what topic should be in Desktop and what topic should be in Core.

Desktop won't be totally empty. We can have more specific queries there which apply only to desktops.

QtK, historically Qt is desktop framework. And 99% of questions in desktop environment (excluding win-specific, linux-specific or mac-specific) will be about core functionality of Qt (which you want to move to Core category).

I suggest some of the categories like:

                    (1) Qt for Symbian
                    (2) Qt for Desktop
                    (3) Qt Mobility
                    (4) Qt Jambi
                    (5) Qt for Windows
                    (6) Qt for maemo
                    (7) Qt General

qtrahul, I don't think we need so small categories. For example why you want to divide Desktop and Win categories?

I'd prefer to rename "Qt Desktop" into "Qt General" or "Qt General/Desktop" as this is the actual meaning of the forum. Any further split does not scale at the moment.

Agreed with this suggestion. Maybe later it should be changed (when DevNet will be more mature) but not now.

Yes, you are right. But now things are changing "Qt is everywhere". The reason I was supporting to have a general or core category is that these questions may be common to mobile, embedded, windows, linux, maemo or any other category.

I agree on this. It's best to keep categories clean and short.

Some good points here on the need for something "General", Alexandra is the Queen of the Forums and when she's back from vacation I'll point her to this thread.

                                  Cheers :)

Thanks. Seems to make sense to rename to Qt General IMHO.

Happy new year to all. Shouldn't i get an email if someone posts on this forum (i have subscribed for this thread - double checked) because i didn't get any.

What happens if it is a desktop specific question? Will that get mixed with Qt General? I am confused.
