Checking For Updates graph always red

In Qt Creator I often see a red bargraph appear (100% red across) with the message "Checking For Updates", located the bottom right corner of my screen.
What does that mean? Is it checking for updates to source files and it's failing? Is it checking for updates to Qt Creator? Other? I can't find any help about this box.
