Ubuntu 18.04 qtcreator (version 5 - qt5) Launch Issue

hello

i'm using qt5 on my ubuntu 18.04 laptop, but i can't launch qtcreator lately, when i click on the launcher. nothing happens.

i use whereis qtcreator , to check its install location. but couldn't see a familiar place

i have checked if it was uninstalled, by retyping these commands:
sudo apt install build-essential
sudo apt install qtcreator
sudo apt install qt5-default
and seems like it is already installed (also tried uninstall and reinstall a few times). can you help on this? thank you

Hello and welcome.

which qtcreator tells you where an executable is on your path. I imagine it's /usr/bin/qtcreator for you?

Run qtcreator from a terminal/shell to verify it works, e.g. no error message. Then find out what executable your Qt Creator icon/shortcut is attempting to run.

Yes, I think running from icon/shortcut means you don't get to see if any error messages launching.

Also FWIW do a ls -l /usr/bin/qtcreator, it might well be a symbolic link and you'd like to know where the executable really is?

No, not at all, I didn't know if it was a symlink is all. But then I am confused why you are getting messages about /home/ububu/Downloads/package/CamTool.64/libQt5Core.so.5, why is that involved?

This implies your /usr/bin/X11 is a symlink to X11. Which is not healthy :) I wonder what ls -lL /usr/bin/X11 has to say?! Whether that gets used/matters I cannot say....

~/package/CamTool.64 may be on your PATH, and that's why qcreator picked it up?

For X11 I looked at mine under Ubuntu 22.04:

jon@ubuntu-20:/usr/bin/X11$ ls -l /usr/bin/X11
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 1 Jul 15  2020 /usr/bin/X11 -> .

So /usr/bin/X11 is a symlink which points to /usr/bin! Hence you will be able to "go down" an unending number of /usr/bin/X11/X11/X11/... levels! Presumably it is there so that something which thinks X11 is in /usr/bin or /usr/bin/X11 still works. Dunno why, peculiar one.... So leave yours alone!

This is for compatibility reasons as some programs expect some other program to be in /usr/bin/X11/ but Ubuntu puts them in /usr/bin/.

ty JonB, for all the help. qtcreator works, and that is the most important. X11 info was great too :)
but i guess, laptop needs a nice format soon
