Cannot open any project - receiving "project is already open" error message when attempting to reopen project as suggested in " Open a document" - document view .
Tried multiple projects and they all report that project is already open. Closing individual or all "open" projects does not solve the problem.

I get an output when project is rebuild, but have no access to any project file, including x.pro.

If I uninstall / reinstall Qt can I keep existing projects?
Is there any other way to recover from this error?

    My OS is Ubuntu 16.

Great, I did figure out the panes names etc.
However, the original issue - project already open - did not show "Project" pane and there is no option to selectively force open "Project" pane when everything works as it should.
So my conclusion is - "Project" pane got closed / disabled or whatever to call it - by accident ( most likely) or by me picking some unknown option somewhere.

Unless there is another opinion or desire to find actually what happen and FIX it I would consider this matter closed - without actual solution / fix / recovery.

      SOLVED !

      ENABLE
In main menu "Window" -->Show sidebar
      will enable
      "Projects" pane
      and ITS submenu

      all is well

        @AnneRanch

Can you post a screenshot from your QtCreator GUI?
Do you have multiple instances of QtCreator running which are trying to access the same projects?

What kind of projects are these? Your own or git cloned one?

Why posting screen shot ? Of what ?

I have ONLY an empty "Open a document " form - with no other data except HOW to open project. The title is <no document >.

I have a mixture of what used to be FULLY accessible projects , some of them from github.

No, there are no multiple QT creators open.

How safe is this command ?

            sudo apt-get install qt5-default

I assume Ubuntu MAY replay it is already installed - but not sure .
If it will do the install -
will it delete all my Qt5 project ?

Can I CHANGE the "default" or what does "default" option actually do? .

default is not an option, it's the name of the package.

This command will (re-) install Qt5 and probably not fix your QtCreator issue.

I did "remove" both QtCreator and Qt5.
After reinstall I get some response, but still cannot edit / open x.pro file.

                4af74e61-7add-4cc2-b556-dfc3a04192c6-image.png

If I click on "design" ( Switch to design mode ) icon I get no response ( after closing the "failed to open project " dialogue ).

                Addendum / edit

                Silly opinion

                IF
the project file is ALREADY open

WHY I cannot "see" it ?

What option am I missing to be able to see open file ?

Did I forget to install something ?
                I used this
                https://lucidar.me/en/dev-c-cpp/how-to-install-qt-creator-on-ubuntu-16-04/

and it worked as advertised UNTIL this " file already open" error showed up.

                PS
I can "switch " to design mode using main menu, but NOT the "design" icon.

I have changed my OS user and rebuild QtCreator and cloned "qtconnectivity" .
Now I am back in business.

Last question which MAY lead to resolution of the original problem.

In the attached screen shot there are NOW FOUR views / panes.

                  WHAT ARE THEIR NAMES ??

Pane "Projects" (??) is obviously missing in the original problem.
My guess is somehow the main view panes got changed

                    This is just your view...

Note the 4 buttons next to Projects and the 2 buttons next to Open Documents (in addition to the drop down menu arrows).
By clicking the arrows, you can setup, what information this area should provide (Projects, Bookmarks, Tests, etc)
If you hover over them, you can read the tooltips... The right one closes this area. The button left to it, will split this area even more (= add a new sub-area), so you can make QtCreator show more information or debug windows or other stuff.
With Alt + 0 (zero) or Alt + Shift + 0 you can hide or show the complete left or right side (no shift to hide / show left side, command with Shift for right side).
You will find this option in your Window menu too (QtCreator menuBar next to Help).

Because it depends on YOU :) There is no "default" setup in QtCreator. If you hide something (knowingly or not), it stays hidden until you enable it again.
