Trouble making splitters?

I want to make a splitter in a layout within the central widget (which also has a layout).
It seems you cannot select "Lay Out _ in Splitter" without breaking your current layout first. The only way I have found is to make the splitter first, which is really annoying because I have to go to the central widget, break layout, make the splitter, put the central widget layout back, and then drag the splitter where I want. Is there a better way?
