Cannot Save My Forum Profile: "Username too long"

I had this account for years, but I've never changed the profile settings. Today I tried adding some information about me in the profile tab but I keep on getting "Username too long" message even without making changes! It looks like the error is due to a JS/frontend check as I cannot see the page sending a request.

@AndyS may have fresher info, but my guess is as good as yours - a limitation of the nodebb setup we are running.
