That is great. I might be forgetting, but I don't think ~ or # are actually regular expression special characters. However, the escape() method may replace every punctuation character with \-character (including non-ASCII characters like copyright) because that never does any harm/is allowed on any punctuation character. Or it might be enough to let * go to \* and then revert any \*s to plain *s (actually .* in your case).

I found a solution with QMAKESPEC

message("SPEC " $$QMAKESPEC) message("SPEC " $$basename(QMAKESPEC))

The output is for instance:

Project MESSAGE: QMAKESPEC C:/Qt/5.4/mingw491_32/mkspecs/win32-g++ Project MESSAGE: SPEC win32-g++

or on linux

Project MESSAGE: QMAKESPEC /home/bloblo/Qt/5.9.1/gcc_64/mkspecs/linux-g++ Project MESSAGE: SPEC linux-g++

separate QTableWidget into a QTableView and a QStandardItemModel add a QSortFilterProxyModel as the model of QTableView and set the QStandardItemModel as the QSortFilterProxyModel's sourceModel call QSortFilterProxyModel::setFilterWildcard or QSortFilterProxyModel::setFilterRegExp to perform the searching
