I booted into Ubuntu Unity and was shocked to discover my app no longer displays in the system tray. After looking around, I found this,

    http://qtm.blogistan.co.uk/blog/matthew-smith/2011/04/qtm-incompatible-ubuntu-unity-system-tray

Unity includes the system tray only for a few specific applications via a "white list"...

This is, unfortunately, Canonical's way of trying to dictate how everyone else uses their system: they have decided that the system tray is incompatible with their user interface philosophy, and they want everyone to re-write their apps to use their notification system.

    WTF?

That is not a very nice way to deal with it.

"Their notification system" is actually something that was developed on freedesktop.org. So some might consider that a standard... Unity and KDE both use it, gnome 3 has decided to use their own incompatible system.

"Aaron Seigos blog post":http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2011/03/collaborations-demise.html on this has triggered a heated discussion on collaboration between free desktop environments recently. Check out the various follow ups from Gnome and Cannonical, too, to get the complete picture.

That's why I have never been a fan of Ubuntu. There are a plenty of really free Linux distributions and it is never too late to get rid of the Ubuntu :)

This is a bit of a copy of a "discussion":http://lists.qt.nokia.com/pipermail/qt-interest/2011-May/033625.html started at the qt-interest mailinglist. Thiago "answered":http://lists.qt.nokia.com/pipermail/qt-interest/2011-May/033626.html there:

Correct. Unity uses the new systray protocol called "indicators" or "notification item", which Qt doesn't support yet.

Canonical developers have prepared a patch for Qt to add this support and to add support for the global menu, but this isn't integrated into Qt yet.
So, the issue can be addressed in Qt, but the patch has not reached the mainlines (yet).

Thanks for the clarification was wondering what to do with the not showing in the systray since upgrading.

              Write “Qt”, not “QT” (QuickTime).

Why not switch to "ye OLD Ubuntu Classic"? I knew it is still supported. I also have apps which uses the system tray. The patch would also be a great help to us but I guess we will just have to wait this time.
