Qt for AM437x TI SDK ver4.3 target with linux os

We are in the process of application code development of CAN serial communication using qt 5.3 version on TI sdk 4.3 version. Actual CAN socket of AM437x is not working that has been provided in the A437x . Hence we are using CAN Socket program given as part of Linux. Now my doubt is how to identify the communication cut from CAN bus using the CAN socket program of Linux. Because when there is no data , the readbyte is not returning zero instead it is nothing. (Other options of that socket function is , 1 or -1 for success and error respectively). How to handle the CAN communication loss through Application program.Thanking you
