Forum Update May 2nd

Hey Qt!

We are soon updating our Forum, and with it some UI changes are coming.
I would like to give you all a heads-up for better transparency, and to also prepare you for our new Forum look.

When is our update scheduled?
We are planning to update it on May 2nd. Therefore, expect the Forum will be down on this day for a few hours.

Which version are we upgrading our Forum to?
Our Forum is currently running on NodeBB v2.8.0, and we are moving forward with its latest NodeBB 3.7.2.

Is our Forum getting a new look?
Yes! Our Forum will be based on the Harmony theme as it comes with many advantages.
Additionally, it will be aligned with Qt’s new brand identity.

The Harmony Theme
This new theme will present us with a fresh and modern design, also making the use of icons less heavy, therefore cleaner. Another example is that when inside inside a sub-topic page, the title of the sub-topic is clearly indicated at the top of the page, so you understand better where you are at.
One important thing to notice is that our navigation bar will move to the left of the screen.

We understand that changing is mostly good and might take some time to adjust.

What about the use on mobile ? Did you also took that into account with the new theme ?

@SGaist hi, yes mobile layout is automatically provided by the Harmony template theme as well. We will make small modifications to it, but you can see already how the UX goes if you resize your browser window when looking at the default example: https://community.nodebb.org/

@Diana looks like it's also moving the upper bar we have now at the bottom of the page (just a quick test from my phone). Some muscle memory are going to get upset 😅

@SGaist any change this is colliding with help-bot avatars or other "floating" widgets that we use?

That was previously the case, I remember making 2 tickets about that. Was on the official website and not here

@J-Hilk The auto hiding bottom bar is likely going to be the thing I like the less. Personal preference but I currently like to have stuff at the top.

I am not sure what you are referring to with help-bot avatars and "floating" widgets though.

It's maybe worth noting that actually viewing the mockup requires both having a Figma login (or registering for a new account), and requesting access to the file, which can only be viewed after the request is approved by Qt.

I assume all requests will be approved, but point is it's very far from an instant-gratification sort of thing.

Hello everyone, I'm sorry to announce that we have to postpone the Forum Update until 29, April 2024 because of some found critical issues after upgrading NodeBB to v3.
I am trying to fix those so we can have the most stable Forum release. Thanks for your understanding. @Pedro Please update the date on the banner so it won't cause any confusion to forum users.

@SGaist Just a teaser, I believe we will have decent mobile support for mobile devices including

• New bottom mobile navigation layout (Some navigation var behavior can be personalized in Profile -> theme settings)
  

• Progressive Web App support with correct Qt icon for Android Google Chrome & iOS Safari

• Post navigator is still at the bottom but with Qt development cool styles :D
