I input gcc on the Linux command line - version shows 5.4.0 20160609, but when compiling qt5.15.2, it is Target compiler: gcc 4.2.1

Check in Creator's kits where it has picked up its gcc (or g++) from. Maybe you have multiple versions of gcc installed, and you need to pick the right one?
