    ...is it possible to output "watch" (or log) the variable values on the lines that it picks out? Or break at that point so I can inspect the values?

      You will want valgrind --- which is just an analyzer --- to work with your debugger for breakpoints etc. Google for valgrind set breakpoint or valgrind gdb for instructions.
