Qt creator 3.6.1 hangs

I'm new to Qt and I just installed this:
Qt Creator 3.6.1
Based on Qt 5.6.0 (MSVC 2013, 32 bit)
Built on Mar 14 2016 09:57:09From revision d502727b2c
and I'm running it on a Windows 7 machine. Whenever I create a new Qt Widgets Application project and try to open a ui file Qt Creator hangs and I have to kill it with the Task Manager. Ditto when I try to run the new application. Any advice?
