Setting an app to be the default app

I am working on a music player and I want to know how can I set my player to be the default music player.
I'm currently working on linux fedora and ubuntu but I also want to know how it is done in windows.
And if this is possible I want to know how to get the path of the files that the user wants to open with my player when the user opens it in the file manager? -
