How to integrate QT Desktop application with attached scanners or digital cameras?

Wanted to explore what are the suitable options to be able to invoke scanner interface from my QT desktop application, take scans and attach the scanned image to my application. I believe there must be some APIs (e.g. TWAIN) available that can be used to achieve this? Would like to hear your experience, recommendations and possibly sample code if possible. Thanks!
