(note: I am completely new to QT)

    On Windows 7 Pro,
    with Visual Studio 2012

QT 5.0.0 installs fine, but nothing runs. Keeps complaining about missing a compiler even though in options->build&make it detects a bunch of C++ 11.0 stuff.

    What gives ?

Qt 5.0.1 will, though :) The Release Candidate is being tested right now (http://releases.qt-project.org/digia/5.0.1/backups/2013-01-18-412/ ) so the final release will be ready shortly. Stay tuned!

P.S. The correct name is "Qt". "QT" is QuickTime

ah, thanks for the update on development and for the correction on Qt vs QT :-)

          Briefly installed "qt-windows-opensource-5.0.1-msvc2012_64-x86_64-offline-2013-01-18-412.exe"
... still no dice though ... this time it complained about a malconfigured cmake ? or something to that effect.

Anyway, I will just put this whole thing on hold.
