It's now called QPA (Qt Platform Abstraction, IIRC). Last time I have checked, there was almost no documentation present. I think it will change for Qt5. For now, you can take a look at Qt DevDays's videos about it.

I've been wondering how hard could it be to make a framework 100% platform independent? Just keep away from using platform features internally, encapsulate all functionality independent of the platform and just communicate with a minimal IO plugin that handles event input and media (video/audio) output. Use a local socket for communication between the core and the IO plugin - on an average machine you have a few gigabits of bandwidth - more than enough to handle whatever IO you throw at it.

That is exactly what QPA is doing...

I've got no idea. I think it still uses QWS, but that is just what some call an educated guess :P

Again, no idea. I remember there was some talk about it on development mailing list, but I don't remember any details.

In the meantime, I have found "this":http://qt-project.org/wiki/Qt-Platform-Abstraction.
