What should http://www.qt.io/developers/ page contain?
-
A thread to provide ideas of what the developers page on qt.io should contain.
As qt-project.org is being moved to redirect pages, the importance of the qt.io developer page is highlighted.
So the question is what do we have on the developer page? What links and content to make it useful for the people visiting or landing there? As background we expect the following types of users primarily visiting the developer pages:
- Anyone googling "Qt Developer"
- People browsing the qt.io site to find general information on Qt
- User who have just downloaded Qt and are looking for information on where to begin
- More experienced users who have questions to ask, but are not sure on what channel to ask on
- The experienced developer who has found a bug (and possibly a workaround or fix) and wants to report/work on the issue

This one's pretty broad, so I'll just cover the categories below.
- People browsing the qt.io site to find general information on Qt
Case studies and demos with a "wow" factor (http://www.qt.io/qt-in-use/).
I'm personally interested in the history and evolution of toolkits, but I'm not sure if others are.
- User who have just downloaded Qt and are looking for information on where to begin
The current "Getting Started" panel is worth keeping.
We should also integrate with other "getting started" material in the documentation. We currently have 3 pages labelled "Getting Started", but they have different focuses, and it's difficult to navigate from one to another:
- http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/gettingstartedqt.html
- http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/gettingstartedqml.html
I think it's worth restructuring these pages, with the Developers page in mind.
- More experienced users who have questions to ask, but are not sure on what channel to ask on
The Developer's page currently has links to the forum and the mailing list, which is good. A link to IRC is missing though, while the forum is linked twice.
I think we should have a short description on how to use each medium. In my mind, the forum is for more "daily" questions, and the mailing list is for "detailed technical" questions. I don't know what goes on at IRC though!
- The experienced developer who has found a bug (and possibly a workaround or fix) and wants to report/work on the issue
Obviously a link to the bug reports place.
The "Join the Community" panel could be further split in two: One subsection for asking questions, and the other for contributing.

One thing I'm really interested in, is what are we missing.
The current page has some links, but I know there is a huge amount of material we have.
And yes, I agree the people landing from google is a broad category, but it's a big number of people every day.

One missing thing is info about the different entrypoints into the community: How to choose between the forum and the mailing lists?

Do your stats show what these people click on next?
