Forum moderating

  • Wanted to test subforums moderating, but can't find where to do it. Is it not ready yet?

  • Grats on the new rank :) Forum moderation is ready, I just need to know what forum you'd like to be promoted on and I'll set it up. I'm guessing the "Qt Development":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewcategory/3/ forums?

  • Yeah, you are right ;)

    P.S. Thanks for congratulations.

  • Moderation rights granted on Qt Development forums now. We have some guidelines I'll send you separately.

  • Moderators

    Dear Admins,

can I get the tools forum and/or the tools-related pages in the wiki, please?

    Best Regards,
    Tobias

  • Hi Tobias!

You have now been officially promoted to moderator of the tools forum. Welcome!

The wiki is not set up for page owners yet but don't let this stop you from feeling responsible. ;)

  • Moderators

    Thanks Alexandra!

I'll use my next compile break to check the tools forum for new stuff I can do there;-)

    Best Regards,
    Tobias

  • Dear admins,

How can I help now that I'm a gene splicer :D ... pls let me know

    BR
    Chetan

  • Moderators

chetankjain: Just raise your voice if you want to moderate a subforum:-)

  • sure Tobias, do send me the guidelines .. can i pick the quick forum?

  • Moderators

chetankjain: I am just a gene splicer... I moderate the Tools forum now, nothing more. You will need to ask Marius or Alexandra.

Alexandra, Marius: Are you the only admins?

  • Now that I have forum moderator rights, how do I find out who is the moderator of a particular forum? Or anyplace I can go and find list of all existing forum moderators? Think it'll be useful to communicate :)

  • Moderators

So far the only moderators are just Denis, you and me:-) Nobody else has the required level.

But I agree that a list of moderators and administrators would be nice to have (preferably incl. the areas of responsibility).

  • We will add moderator badges at some point, and there will be a moderator group once the groups module is out (this fall). This thread can work as our "home" for now I guess.

So far we have Tobias (Nokia) on Tools, Johannes on Games, Denis on Desktop, chetankjain all over and Hanne (Nokia) on Education. Alexandra and I are global moderators, but Alexandra is running the "who and what" of moderation.

  • thanks Markus, also is it recommended that moderators directly go and edit text to convert to links, add [Solved] to topic subject if solved? ... bugging u all with too many questions :)

  • We are in learning mode all of us, so questions are all good :)

I'll ping Alexandra for a reply.

  • Another one, is it so that only an admin can modify the FAQs? .. quite a few things (mostly minor) that could be fixed there :)

  • Moderators

Congratulations, Hanne! I had not noticed you became a Dinosaur Breeder yet!

  • I feel pinged...

I usually edit text and convert it to links if I stumble across something. We were thinking about automating that but so far it's not in. I don't think it's a big issue but definitely more convenient to have proper links.

The [Solved] addition to the title is a more tricky one. Currently, we don't have a real process for that. At some point - when we get our Q&A forum - there should be a proper solution where the original author is able to indicate that the problem was solved and by whom. In the meantime, editing the title by adding [Solved] in front sounds like a good idea. :)

No, they are in the hands of the Qt Support Team, the FAQ's are exported from them every night.

We are adding a feature for them to monitor comments so they can update the FAQs as needed. Also we are improving our import procedure to remove FAQs that are no longer in the nightly export, we have some orphan FAQs now.

  • thanks Alexandra, one more ... last probably for this weekend :-P

Why no points to moderators for editing and fixing posts :-( ... heh heh

  • Nice try. ;)

  • ROFL ... yes or no ?

  •
Congratulations, Hanne! I had not noticed you became a Dinosaur Breeder yet!
She isn't quite there yet :) But she is the one coordinating the work so it's by special appointment.

  • Congrats to Hanne on the new rank. Also congrats to Tobias and Denis on becoming Gene Splicers :)

  • one basic question, what if as a moderator you see someone using foul language or short forms like wtf .. do u edit or just leave it considering the context? very subjective right? :)

  • Moderators

chetankjain: Short forms like 'u'? ;-)

  • lol, ok using phrases like wtf are common and not frowned upon in some cultures, but in some cultures its a NO NO.. what do we moderators do :)

    'u' is ok i guess :P

  •
one basic question, what if as a moderator you see someone using foul language or short forms like wtf .. do u edit or just leave it considering the context? very subjective right? :)
That's a tricky one. I'd say: it depends. The post shouldn't be offending to anyone or plain vulgar. But lines blur and what might be okay for one could be way off for someone else. Let's see how far we get with common sense.

If all fails there is still the "report" option.

  • @alexandra makes sense :)

  • bq. Area 51 Engineer: can become admin of the forum or wiki

    how can I help :)

  • Our very first Area 51 Engineer :) well done! Hope you like your new badge!

Alexandra is away on a plane somewhere but I'm sure she will get in touch with you when she's back.

  • thanks Marius! all the badges are good and so is this one! feels good each time your badge changes :)

  • Moderators

chetankjain: You are planning to marsh through to mad scientist in a rush, aren't you?

Congratulations on becoming a area 51 engineer!

  •
chetankjain: You are planning to marsh through to mad scientist in a rush, aren't you?

Thanks Tobias :) .. but 10K is a long way to go and then one has to sustain through 6 months points expiry too ... won't be easy

  • We believe the "Mad Scientist" rank is quite accurately named ;)

  •
... the Mad Scientist badge in pure awesomeness :)

Don’t tell anyone… but sometimes, at night, when no one is watching, for just a few minutes, wearing my 4DOS geek t-shirt, I grant myself 11k points on the test server (only for testing purposes of course), so I can surf around wearing the Mad Scientist badge, making sure it displays correctly in every thinkable context, like in the mirror. It’s just that cool.

Now, where did I put my medicine again? ;)
now isn't that temptation enough :P by the end of all this few of us will be on medication here I guess heh heh ...

    knock knock :)

  • Not able to edit "this particular thread":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewthread/1072/, rest seem ok .. other moderators are you able to see the edit/move/delete links?

  • Qt Certification is a new board, moderators are not yet organized.
