Direct email response to private messages
-
I've gotten a couple of private messages from other members. The message has a link for responding. It would be nice if a direct email response could be made. I'm not suggesting exposing member email addresses. I'm proposing some sort of email relay that would only work for responding to these private messages. The problem with the response link is that it looses the context of the original message, which makes the email exchange very disjointed.

+1 I faced the same issue.

I see you have just made a "related posting":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/forums/viewthread/2369/

Or maybe that you two were at similar circumstances at the same time. ;)
Thats right.

Our "e-mail member" feature is, as you know, pretty light weight.
If we make a mail relay feature (would have to be custom made) the next feature request would be a private message (PM) system like Facebook and many other forum solutions. Something we actually have for this site but it's not enabled. So if we want to expand 1-to-1 communication on the devnet I think we should jump the relay step and go PM.
Now in the interest of KISS and the "develop just the features you actually use a lot"-thinking I need to know if this is a key feature or not. PM systems for niche sites could be, for some, "just another channel, how annoying". And it adds to complexity, something that for 80% of the users subtracts from usability.

Very useful for me too. All the DevNet communications is done on the website with the only one exception of reading private messages (you have to answer them in the DevNet anyways). So, yes some kind of private messaging would be very nice. Additionally I would like to receive message alerts via email, just like the subscribe to a thread in the forums (maybe configurable in the preferences). I don't know how it's made i facebook (I refuse to open an account there :-)), but if you need some reference: the way the folks at xing.com do it, is quite good.

I added a vote for it:

For me, I think it would not add much to the already big number of ways we can contact each other. PM's are a feature that, indeed, many forum-like enviroments have, but personally I have never really seen the point. I just found it annoying to get email messages with "there is a new message for you" and then having to go to the the site to actually see it. Profiles already contain mail addresses, IRC channels, Skype nicks, etc, besides also being able to just reply in a thread directly. Isn't that enough already to contact each other? Do we really need Yet Another Channel?
I think mariousg's concern that it just adds complexity that for most users would substract from usability a justified thought.
It is a bit cumbersome, I agree. It's just a matter of prioritization. I personally find it pretty annoying to not receive the contents of a message directly in my inbox but only after clicking some link...
Quite true. That's why in an ideal world I would prefer a notification email that contains the message, together with the in-site storage of the personal messages. Just like the folks at xing.com do it (with the exception, that DevNet should include the complete message :-) ).
