Hi all. FynePDF is a desktop PDF editor we make. It started as an Electron app, and in October we rewrote it in Qt 6.12 with a Qt Quick UI. The PDF work is C++ on PDFium and qpdf. It's out now on the Microsoft Store, and there's a Linux AppImage.

Before and after, on the same Windows PC:

    • Installed size: 601 MB before, 148 MB now
    • Processes: 4 before, 1 now
    • Warm start to the home screen: about 0.6 s
    • Page 1 of a 1 GB PDF: 237 ms

It edits, merges, splits, compresses, converts, OCRs, signs and prints PDFs. OCR runs on the CPU with PaddleOCR models on ONNX Runtime. The tools run on your machine and keep working offline. The UI is in 13 languages, right-to-left included. You need a free account, paid plans are optional.

The parts that took the longest:

    • getting QML to look the same as the old CSS (gradients, shadows, line heights)
    • a custom title bar that still gives Windows 11 snap layouts
    • a few surprises from the QML ahead-of-time compiler

    Windows: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NLX6MNF70H2
    Linux: https://fynepdf.com/download/linux

Happy to go into detail on any of it.
