I have read an other post few days ago that there are lot of topics with redundant tags like widget and qwidget. I beleive the root of these two problems are same :)
Okay so uh... I suggest another cleanup regarding tags.
As I understand Marius above we are in some kind of beta stage so these are only transient effects of the current solution and most probably there will be some cleaning / rationalization in the future.

How about a (per-forum) blacklist or so? Otherwise, like all posts in here are tagged "devnet", I'd expect all threads in the German forum to be tagged "german" and so on. :-)

There is still the beta forum, it just has changed its place...

Anyway, I don’t see any point in those tags, shouldn’t system take care of them instead, making magic with search results.

"beta" tag is very old tag. It is used for topics from beta testing forum.

I don't think we need to worry too much about "useless" and/or redundant tags. It should be quite easy for some admin at one point to automatically combine similar tags and delete obviously bad ones.

Few minutes of messing with the database against hours manually adding and removing tags from posts.... :(

Of course the elf being in town and the 2pts may be a good incentive for not very "smart" use of time.... :)

Just to confirm this, we have a Tag back-end where we can remove and merge tags with just a few clicks.

And just think about this: by all of these posts and discussions finally a wiki page was bor about "Tagging":http://developer.qt.nokia.com/wiki/Tagging , which I've just translated to Hungarian, and there are some other translations, so sooner or later, but there will be a nice and useful tagging system. Merging and deliting is done by admins and we can take a rest :)

Just a quick note that "devnet" and "beta" has been pruned out, the wiki page CreMindES links to above has more info about "bad" tags.

So the clean up has started.

I thinks it's continues :) Even I remove some bad tags sometimes when a wiki is extremely overtagged with irrelevant tags... And the admins merge and remove some too if they find some bad of them.

Just wondering: are points taken away from "bad" taggers?

                              Yes, it has been.

And to answer the question that always comes up then:
No, you cannot hijack points from another user by re-adding the tag yourself. The points will be reassigned to the original tagger in the night, when some magic script cleans up the stuff.
